The "Last On, First Off" Rule
This is the golden rule for imitation jewelry.
Last On: Put your jewelry on after you have applied perfume, hairspray, lotion, and makeup. The chemicals in these products cause the plating to oxidize (turn black or green) rapidly.
First Off: Take it off as soon as you get home to avoid snagging it on clothes or exposing it to household cleaners.
2. Keep it Dry
Moisture is the enemy of alloy metals.
No Water: Never wear imitation jewelry while showering, swimming (chlorine is especially harsh), or washing dishes.
Sweat Factor: If you know you’ll be doing something high-energy, leave the jewelry behind. Sweat contains salts that can erode the gold plating.
3. Proper Storage
Oxygen and humidity cause metal to tarnish over time.
